As I sit on a 4-hour flight, I’m reminded how sore I get when my body doesn’t move. My quads are killing me, my low back is aching, and my shoulders are hunched up to my ears. As much as I’d like to roll out a exercise mat and do some quick yoga, Pilates, or barre moves in the aisle, I’ve learned how to subtly stretch without annoying my seatmates. Denver’s yoga teacher training programs have been in the news a lot recently. The Division of Private Occupational Schools (DPOS), a state agency, has mailed letters to 82 yoga studios across the city that offer teacher training programs, asking them to comply with the 2002 law that requires them to certify themselves with the state. But what does that really mean for small studios trying to support themselves with limited revenue streams? And why are yoga studios being hit with these costs now?
